Long Red is Craig West's still take on his signature Counoise-Chardonnay-Carignan blend, the same trio he uses across several of his most popular bottlings. The 2020 is 60% Chardonnay from the CCOF-certified, dry-farmed Lolonis Vineyard in Redwood Valley, Mendocino, 30% Counoise from the CCOF-certified, dry-farmed Love Ranch Vineyard in Madera (grown on thin granitic schist soils), and 10% Carignan also from Madera.
West makes wine at the Les Lunes cooperative space in Richmond, California. All Gearhead wines are produced from organically farmed fruit, foot-tread, with carbonic maceration, no added sulfur, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is a zero-zero wine in the truest sense.
The result is a light, chillable red that drinks more like a carbonic Rhone blend than anything else California produces. The Chardonnay softens the structure and adds texture; the Counoise brings high-toned red fruit and acidity; the Carignan adds spice and grip. Best served with a light chill.
